I contacted the
gardener and curator Kelly Mahl, who agreed to meet me at the rose garden on
June 6. Kelly is a Plant Materials Specialist at the Ohio Agricultural Research
and Development Center and knows the garden better than anyone. If fact, it is
her devotion and sweat that maintains this 2.7 acre treasure of roses. The
garden was funded by Mrs. Samuel J. Forbes in honor of her fauther, rose
breeder Michael Horvath. The original planting of 1,500 roses of more than 500
different varieties was given by nurseryman Joeseph Kern. The original
garden plan can be seen here. There
are a total of 109 photos.
