During a business trip to San Jose, CA in May of 2002, I rented a car and drove through the desert to Los Angeles to attend the Old Rose Symposium at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino. The roses were in full bloom and most inspiring to the photographer within. Some of the once-blooming roses were a bit past their prime, but there was an endless variety and number of roses to photograph. There are 126 photos in this set on two pages. All photos were taken with an Olympus E20-N digital camera.

Note on 'Jeanne d'Arc'

After a recent conversation with Rev. Doug Seidel, this rose labeled 'Jeanne d'Arc' at the Huntington is most likely the rose mentioned as "St. Leonards" by Mrs. Keays in her 1932 ARS Annual article "Old Roses in Calvert County, Maryland":

"Were there others somewhere? We went hunting. While we have not found another Faded Pink Monthly anywhere, our hunting has been good. We have one with white flowers coming in great clusters, pure white under the sun but often opening with a deep rose-colored, small, sharply marked center made by the rosy shanks of the petals. The books say Aimée Vibert is pure white. So be it. We are calling the white rose "St. Leonards" as we got it near the St. Leonards post office."
